It’s summer in Portland, and you know what that means. Legendary talent Alex Pardee returns once again to Portland to transform the FIFTY24PDX Gallery into a shrine of objects created from his demented imagination. This year, we are doing it bigger and better than ever, featuring weekly events, “Movie Knights,” and giveaways. The details are a secret (for now), so keep your eyes and ears open for sneak peeks and more tidbits of information to drop in the coming weeks.

Opening First Thursday, June 7

Alex Pardee will be in attendance First Thursday, July 5th, 2012 at 7pm

Show runs through July 29, 2012

About Alex Pardee:

“As I was walking to my favorite deli, I saw a man get hit by a car. His hip slammed against the license plate on the car’s bumper and the force of the impact caused half of his axial skeleton to eject itself from his skin and muscles. The driver of the murder weapon didn’t even slow down to apologize. I shouted and sprinted over to the victim but I instantly realized that he wasn’t a man at all. What I watched explode onto the asphalt like a cartoon piñata was actually just a plastic garbage bag with a few shreds of bone white paper and a cranberry juice box. Things like this happen to me all of the time. My imagination takes over and makes me see things that don’t happen, and that don’t exist. I try to draw some of these experiences to share them with you, but I have a long way to go before I can really help you see what I see.” – ALEX PARDEE

Jeremy Fish Golden hills upper playground In our Webstore: Jeremy Fish The Golden Hills Print prints Jeremy Fish

Upper Playground and Jeremy Fish have just released our new print, “The Golden Hills,” as an opening message to Fish’s exhibition at FIFTY24SF this summer. The print is made in an edition of 100, signed and numbered the artist, and printed at the fantastic Bloom Press in Oakland, California.

The print is currently on sale at Upper Playground’s webstore.

“This drawing was inspired by that looming feeling that San Francisco is an isolated island from the rest of the country. As SF becomes more and more expensive, and the lower income creative folks that make this city pulse get squeezed off the island, “the city that knows how” will slowly transform into a sterile west coast Manhattan full of tech chads and internet gurus.” —Jeremy Fish

Because we just really love the visual effect of what we are looking at, we will let DesignBoom takeover the rest: “each photo-image by japanese artist makoto sasaki in his new series ‘tokyo layers’ has been enhanced in such a way that the pictured city seems to be busier still, enabled by his unique method of image creation. tokyo has been captured by sasaki as an accumulation of all of the city’s busy and frenetic energy told through his long, moving exposure, and interruption of light works of art. layers of luminosity and elongated buildings have been realized in a manner that contemplates the inhabitants within the futuristic structures rather than focusing upon the bustling metropolis as a singular organism. the prints produced by sasaki in ‘tokyo layers’ have been developed without any digital adjustments, but instead achieve their painterly quality from the artist’s movement when the original image was captured. frantic gallery notes that the cyberpunk, futuristic gothics or urban-ghost aesthetic is intrinsic but rather than this motif being the primary subject of the artist, he instead focuses upon a representation of the city of tokyo’s essence as a work of art. ”

The King is Steel, the Queen is Plywood, and the sooner you know that, and the sooner Tom Sachs explains it to you, the more you will use plywood in your life. And yes, Mr Sachs, in conjunction with his Nike Craft collaboration and his Space Program: Mars show at Park Avenue Armory, he made an entire 7+ minute video on plywood. This is when you know you “have made it.”
