First, we love Tom Sachs and all his bizarre NASA meets fine art work. But we are confused and fascinated by this Tom Sachs x NikeCraft Mars Yard Shoe (plus a collection of jackets and space bags) that Sachs has on his site’s shop, plus the beautiful spread at NikeCraft.com. What is going on? What is $350 but not really for sale? And when can we buy this amazing shoe?

From Sachs:

At NIKECraft, products are developed for athletes, not consumers. Our athlete, Tommaso Rivellini, is a mechanical engineer at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Among many other projects, Tommaso invented the airbags used on the 1997 and 2004 Mars rovers. Long gone are the days of wingtipped brouges, pocket protectors, and skinny ties. The rocket scientist uniform of today is faded jeans, a golf shirt, and sneakers. These shoes are built to support the bodies of the strongest minds in the aerospace industry.

Special features include: outsoles borrowed from the NIKE special forces boot (SFB), vectran fabric from the Mars Excursion Rover airbags, and detailing from Apollo Lunar Overshoes. These premium athletic shoes thrive in the rugged terrain of the simulated Mars Yard in Pasadena, CA – as well as stealthily creeping the mission-funding hallways of headquarters in Washington, D.C.

James Franco’s long-awaited, year-delayed ode to the cult of “Rebel Without A Cause.” is set to open in Los Angeles at JF Chen through the MOCA on Saturday, May 12. “Rebel” features multi-media works from Franco, Harmony Korine, Douglas Gordon, Aaron Young, Ed Ruscha, Paul McCarthy, and Terry Richardson, and we think that there are gang-banging women riding around on bikes naked. Or something like that. It is Harmony Korine, after all.

Kevin Cyr of Brooklyn opens a new exhibition, In Praise of Rust, at Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC on May 19, and we already like the looks of his newest series of vans. Love how he is able to repaint, reimagine, and recreate the looks of these vans he finds around New York. Great stuff…

Jennifer Rubell’s Life-Sized Nutcrackers

First shown at the Dallas Contemporary in late 2011 and back on display at Frieze this past weekend, we are huge fans of Jennifer Rubell’s life-sized nutcrackers… that actually work as nutcrackers. From her site, in regards to their showing in Dallas:

“Each prefabricated female mannequin is mounted on her side in an odalisque position and has been retooled to function as a nutcracker. Visitors interact with each sculpture by placing a pecan in the mannequin’s inner thigh, then pushing down the upper leg to crack open the nut so they may eat it in the gallery. Inspired by nutcrackers depicting female figures – and in particular one found on the internet of Hillary Clinton – these interactive sculptures embody the two polar stereotypes of female power: the idealized, sexualized nude female form; and the too-powerful, nut-busting überwoman. The work also serves as a prompt to action, encouraging the viewer to transgress the traditional viewer-artwork boundary and complete the work by participating in it.”
