Thursday Never Knows: “I Want to Tell You”

February 2nd, 2012

One of the most underrated songs in the Beatles catalog (which is a dumb thing to even write) is the George Harrison 1966 gem, “I Want to Tell You.” Revolver is full of special moments, jumping from feeling to feeling, and Harrison seems to more in-tune with Lennon on this album, taking pop to new levels.

Thursday Never Knows: “Getting Better”

January 19th, 2012

It is kind of bizarre song, with hints of overcoming anger, domestic violence, all with the sunny disposition of some of Paul’s greatest works. Abused in covers over the years, this is one of the overlooked gems in the Beatles catalog. Pure pop perfection.

Real headlines: “Toilet roll The Beatles refused to use while recording Abbey Road could sell for £1,000 per sheet”

This one was in the Daily Mail. The saddest part is that we were interested in this. The Beatles, toilet paper, Abbey Road, and auctions? Great times living in the Modern World.

Apparently, “The Beatles once refused to use a toilet roll while recording their world famous Abbey Road album – because they thought it was too ‘hard and shiny’.

“Proving that even the world’s most famous band was not adverse to the odd diva strop, the rock legends rejected the roll during the 1960s as it also had EMI stamped on every sheet.

“Their antics came to light after Beatles fan Barry Thomas snapped up the toilet roll at an auction complete with a letter from EMI manager Ken Townsend.”

The world’s most famous paparazzi photographer, Ron Galella, is being celebrated at PhotoEspana 2011 Festival, in Madrid, Spain right now, showcasing some of his finest slightly scummy works of Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, Cary Grant, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Paul Newman, and Mick Jagger.

But how badass is that Lennon and Jagger shot up there? Wow, legends of the game. Lennon is probably telling him, “Oh Mick, you’re band can tour year after year if they like, but no offense, you ain’t shit to the Beatles, bitch.” And so on and so forth..

Brian Wilson on ‘Pet Sounds’: Not as good as The Beatles’ ‘Rubber Soul’

And we think that neither are as good as Revolver, but then again, Brian Wilson may be onto something in that Rubber Soul began the thread that led to the Beatles making some of the most experimental pop of the era, maybe ever. But, most people in the music critic sphere call Pet Sounds the grand statement of American music in the 1960s, maybe ever, so Brian doesn’t have to feel bad.

We really want to get our hands on a copy of the new book, The Lost Beatles Photographs, featuring never-before-seen shots of the band’s earliest American tours during the 1960s. There is just some nice candid moments with a band at the absolute height, right before they decided never to tour again, so you actually get to see real backstage moments as opposed to promotional or studio shots. A must.

This is the 47th Anniversary of the Beatles first American trip, concerts, Ed Sullivan, all of it. The LA Times writes, “Two days after that seismic telecast (Ed Sullivan), the Fab Four played their first bona fide concert on U.S. soil at the Coliseum in Washington D.C., an event that was shown in movie theaters around the country in a closed-circuit telecast that has never been widely broadcast since.”

The Beach Boys and Lesley Gore “opened.”

This Friday in Hollywood, the American Cinematheque will show the film of the entire concert for the first time since it was seen back in 1964.

We want to go.

One of the great covers in the Oasis catalog began showing up in setlists in 1994, and contained the early wall of sound that Noel was able to capture in many of the early arrangements in his own songs. This was all noise, contrary to the original Beatles/Lennon song, full-on energy from a band that lacked energy on stage. Liam was born to sing this way, even if you don’t like him, he carries this track with a snarl.

As we were writing about the Beatles yesterday, we kept thinking toward Southern California and the Beach Boys. They were grand on a different scale, as Brian Wilson grew to be a studio production genius on Pet Sounds. Few, if any albums made in America, have topped this 1966 gem. Lush, introspective, hopeful and perfect, this album is the sum of all parts of what pop should be.

It starts with the sublime “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” and ends with “Caroline, No.”

Of course, anything Beatles related is going to have a touch of cool to it, but we have never seen a photo like this before of their early stage set up, and we just love all the wires but minimal pomp to the whole get up. No pedals, no effects, just two guitars, a bass, piano, and drum kit, and they made the best rock and pop music ever, so take note kids. You don’t need a 311 set-up to make it. . .

Watch this clip of the Beatles documentary of their first trip to the US.
