Hey, when someone has 45,000 euros to burn, and they want the less famous Checkpoint Bravo (far inferior to Checkpoint Charlie), why not bid on it and win? That’s right, a telephone bidder won one of the busiest crossing points between East and West Berlin back when crossing over was like parting the Red Sea.
ArtDaily reports “The sole bidder secured the site — which includes a derelict bridge and a crumbling cafe covered in graffiti.”

We just had a friend of the site go to Berlin for a few weeks, and they have been raving about Berlin. So when we saw that German filmmaker pilpop had made this 9-minute short called “Little Big Berlin,” we had a bit of excitement and loyalty to it. Watch it below.

Earlier this year, Kehinde Wiley showcased four new pieces in Berlin to coincide with the World Cup, with portraits of 3 soccer greats Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon, John Mensah of Ghana, and Emmanuel Eboué of Ivory Coast. “Wiley painted three individual portraits of each player wearing the Africa Unity Kit, and then a fourth ‘Unity’ Portrait was painted with all three players together, symbolizing the united countries of Africa.” So now, teamed up Puma, Wiley has had the work traveling around the world, but finally the 4 pieces have found there way to Studio One in Cape Town for a Kehinde exhibition, again, all in conjunction and timed for this big thing called the World Cup that is going on in South Africa.
Point is, Kehinde Wiley is a badass.

We always like it when classic institutions team up with 21st Century emergent giants. Like the Guggenheim and YouTube, and we can throw the Whitney Biennale as an old-timer done well. According to Fast Company, “The two institutions, alongside collaborator HP, are hoping to “elevate the debate” about what people can do with video.” So they are teaming up for this collaboration, saying “There are no limitations on content–from documentaries, to stop-motion, animation and music videos–in short, just about anything that will fill a YouTube screen, and the 20 finalists will be shown at the Guggenheim in New York, as well as its outposts in Berlin, Bilbao and Venice.”
Recall Berlin 20 years ago? A city divided, a global symbol of Cold War separatism. Two decades later, the sprawling metropolis is a thriving haven for emerging artists and inventive projects. It’s also home to Germany’s most exciting outdoor undertaking of 2010.
