But what is the biggest load of bullshit we have ever seen is that the company didn’t actually use Twitter to announce it, they did interviews with news sources like the Chronicle. Um, what has this Twitter thing been about, what have we been working toward?

Hung jury in David Choe contest…

August 9th, 2010

Well, we can’t decide who to crown the winner of the contest. David couldn’t decide either. We blame everyone that submitted for putting us in this predicament, because there’s just too much really good stuff that was submitted to the contest, and it doesn’t seem fair for us to choose when it’s this close…  Check out all the submissions for yourself.

We ran through a bunch of ideas around about how to decide the winner of this contest, and basing it purely by Facebook and Twitter shares just didn’t seem to put everyone on an equal enough playing field… We’re not taking any more submissions, but we’ve opened up a democratic voting system on each picture. And it was added to all the submissions at the same time. So next Monday (8/16/10) at noon PST whoever has the most votes for their piece will win a set of David Choe’s Munko Vinyl Toys, a copy of his new book, and a drawing by David himself. Good luck.

Here’s some of the submissions so far:

The SFGate and the SF Chronicle today have an article on Dan Dion, a photographer who happens to shoot photos of comedians when they are not on stage. He is the house photographer of the Punch Line is SF, and has a new book out,  Satiristas!: Comedians, Contrarians, Raconteurs & Vulgarians. We just like this one line he had to say: “Funny pictures have a rapidly descending half-life. Each time you see it, it’s half as funny.”

Bruce Jenkins, a sports columnist for the SF Chronicle, and one of the best American newspaper writers on the topic of the World Cup, just reminded the England National team of the cockiness of which they came into this World Cup. Now they are on the brink of complete collapse.

To quote Mike Skinner… “It was supposed to be soooo eassssyyyyy.”

When we talked to Mcsweeney’s publisher Eli Horowitz recently, he told us the publishing house meant to have a 10-year celebration in the form of a book or something. That passed, and nothing came. Then maybe 11 years, there would be a book or something. Well, we are somewhere in the area of 11 or 12 years, and now, through Chronicle Books, there is going to be a nice collection called Art of Mcsweeney’s.

From the Chronicle Books site:

“Art of McSweeney’s — A novel with each cover hand-illustrated by the author. Literary journals bound by magnets, or designed to look like junk mail. The sharp wit, gorgeous design, and playful why not invention of independent literary publisher McSweeney’s have earned it a large and loyal following and made its journals, books, The Believer magazine, and Wholphin DVDs collectible favorites of readers and graphic designers alike. Created by the McSweeney’s staff to commemorate their 11th (or 12th) anniversary, this book showcases their award-winning art and design across all the company’s activities. It features hundreds of images, interviews with collaborators such as Chris Ware and Michael Chabon, and dozens of insights into McSweeney’s quirky creative process and the visual experience of reading.”

There is a video to look at as well.

David Choe’s “Dirty Hands” documentary gets great review in SF Chronicle, now playing in San Francisco

Looks like San Francisco likes David Choe. Dirty Hands got a really good review from the SF Chronicle this weekend, with a really good line from the reviewer, “You feel engaged. Bored. Exhilarated. Offended. Illuminated. Disoriented. All in the same minute.”

And this one is good too, “All in all, Choe’s self-indulgent, adolescent exploits make for a fascinating, if somewhat jumbled, journey. It’s not every day that you run into a street artist, petty thief, porn illustrator, lesbian fiction ghost writer, world traveler, graphic novelist, muralist, sex addict and born-again Christian, all rolled into one.

Kim set out to make a renegade film about a renegade genius. And that he did.”

Go see the movie at the Roxie Theater this week.
