Peter Funch, one of our favorite photographers, will be presenting new triptychs at V1 Gallery’s Armory show booth this week. The entire booth has a nice focus. A Nordic Focus if you will. Featuring works from not only Funch, but Thomas Øvlisen, Søren Behncke, Jesper Dalgaard, Julie Nord, Troels Carlsen, and Hesselholdt & Mejlvang.

Two quotes that Funch is using around his new work makes us especially happy:

“That’s what the World is, after all, an endless battle of contrasting memories…” —Haruki Murakami, 1Q84

“Trout, incidentally, had written a book about a money tree. It had twenty-dollar bills for leaves. Its flowers were government bonds. Its fruit was diamonds. It attracted human beings who killed each other around the roots and made very good fertilizer.” —Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse Five

Skull Portraits by Carsten Witte

We never claim to be huge fans of skull art, and we always think its funny when people have a skull-fetish. But wow, the work done here by Carsten Witte, which has had a nice run around the blogosphere in recent weeks, is quite stunning. A little face-paint, a model, black and white photography, be from Hamburg, and you got yourself a good series. The work is called “Intuition.”

Where King Ludwig II lived

This is where he liked to hide. We would think that if you were King, you would hide here, too. What an incredible structure. Wonder how much this would go for these days? From Beautiful Places to Visit:

Built in the late 1800s, the Neuschwanstein Castle in the state of Bavaria in southeast Germany was meant to be the private retreat of the reclusive King Ludwig II of Bavaria, but he died before it was completed. The castle was opened to the public in 1886 and it has seen over 60 million visitors since then. The Neuschwanstein Castle was built in the Romanesque Revival style and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty castle. The castle is one of the most popular in Europe and currently sees over 1.3 million visitors a year and as many as 6,000 per day in the summer months. The castle overlooks the Hohenschwangau valley and is near the tourist town of Fussen where accommodation can be found.

After a very odd buffing of a classic Swoon piece on the side of Pal’s on 24th and Hampshire in the Mission, Swoon sent a new piece to be placed back at the same location after a bit of discussion with the building owner. And everything is as it should be.

One of our favorites, whom we have written about on TCR many times, is Swedish artist EKTA, who both in abstract, portrait, and mural techniques, makes stunning contemporary works. We just saw a few pieces that the artist posted on their site… and of course, we want them.

First Friday: Masta Ace “A Walk Thru The Valley”

March 2nd, 2012

Masta Ace and his classic 1993 album, SlaughtaHouse LP has always been one of our favorite hip-hop albums of all-time, and for some reason we just randomly brought it out the other day. A very cynical album, but always on-point in terms of style and delivery, “A Walk Thru The Valley” is part manifesto, part sound collage, part perfect opening number. Enjoy the Brooklyn MC at his finest.

Insensatez. In a good way.

March 2nd, 2012

This video contains one of those songs that really cool people tell you they have been listening to for years. And you feel cooler for hanging out with said cool person. But then you realize it really is cool, so you are now cool, and you show some girl to prove you are cool. AK, here is a song we like… its by Antonio Carlos Jobim. (via)
