General Lee at auction

Not the Civil War General Lee, we mean the Dukes’ General Lee. Jalen Rose, a member of the Fab Five and a mighty good NBA player for a decade plus, will auction off his 1969 Dodge Charger that is a real Lee on eBay, all to benefit Detroit youth.

Says Rose, The ‘General Lee’ is one of the most well known cars in American television history. I am proud to own such an esteemed car, but it means so much more to benefit the lives of Detroit youth with the launch of the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy this coming September. Funding for schools is essential to their overall success, and I saw the auction of the General Lee as a key way to help raise money and awareness for the school.”

Chris Kaman of the Los Angeles Clippers likes Bows and Arrows and hates Californians

When interviewed by the Detroit Free Press, chronicled here,  the Michigan-native NBA center, Chris Kaman, just went for it.

So how’s life? I’ve just been hanging out, you know? Pretty much just playing basketball, and when that’s over, I pretty much just come home and relax. Actually, one thing I do in my spare time is I shoot a bow and arrow in my backyard.

and…

So what’s the best thing about living in California? There isn’t a whole lot. I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all. I like the weather, that’s probably the best thing. Other than that, the traffic sucks, the people are jerks. Not everybody, that’s a generalized statement, I understand, but for the most part a lot of people you’ll find are kind of arrogant and stuck up. I’m used to Michigan and Midwest people.

Nothing says go home more than an injury-prone, multi-millionaire center.

When we were in high school, there was this distant land of Detroit that was the capital of progressive house and techno music, and Carl Craig was the guy you knew. Todd Sines created a photojournal on DailySwarm, that we found interesting because one it made us feel older, and two, it makes Detroit get honored for its always majorly progressive music.

Juxtapoz and Powerhouse Productions Create New Blueprint in Detroit

Back in November of 2009, Upper Playground and SA Studios partnered to sponsor the Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Benefit and Auction event held in Los Angeles, with proceeds from the online auction supporting Power House Productions of Detroit.

Fast-forward to October of 2010, after the money raised was used to purchase homes in the Detroit neighborhood that Powerhouse is headquartered, and six artists chosen by Juxtapoz (Swoon, Saelee Oh, Monica Canilao, Ben Wolf, Richard Colman, and RETNA) spent a month transforming the homes into unique art projects. The project will continue as experimental artist residencies and livable homes in the Powerhouse neighborhood.

We look forward to seeing how the project evolves in the coming years. Powerhouse and Juxtapoz created a unique, experimental project that uses an abandoned urban landscape into a positive cycle of creative participation from both Detroit and national artists. If this is a blueprint for other cities around the post-industrial world to follow, this is the start.

This is much different than “Pajama Jeans”. Makeshift wearable homeless shelters by a Design student from Michigan. A lot of these design kids are turning their art projects into useful, cool things that actually serve a much bigger purchase and provide interesting homes, shelter, warmth for people, which we think is pretty fucking cool. We are going to go back and find some more and share them with you soon.

Swoon was just out in Detroit with Juxtapoz and Power House Productions in conjunction with Juxtapoz‘ 15th Anniversary Benefit Auction they held last year in Los Angeles. Looks like the mag raised money for Power House, and now Swoon, Monica Canilao, Saelee Oh, Ben Wolf, Richard Colman, and Retna are all headed out to Detroit to work on the housed and properties bought with the Auction money.

Our good friend Jason Jaworski is out on the scene, as well as photographer Kevin Hayes, and they took these shots of Swoon’s work. Cool stuff. More here.
