Jeremy Fish iPad 2 Giveaway

December 20th, 2011

Jeremy Fish and Upper Playground have teamed up to create a new app to bring Fish’s groundbreaking “Listen and Learn” exhibition to your iPad and iPhone. In conjunction with the app’s launch, Jeremy Fish has illustrated (and we mean hand drew, with his actual hands) the back of a brand new iPad 2 being given away on Upper Playgrond’s Facebook page.

This past summer at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC, Jeremy Fish created an interactive exhibition featuring 30 paintings based on stories told my some of Fish’s closest friends and inspirational talents. Each painting was accompanied with headphones to allow visitors to listen to the audio recordings while viewing Jeremy’s visual interpretation of the story on the wall. Fish gathered Snoop Dogg, Aesop Rock, Mike Giant, Lance Mountain, El-P, Ron English, Ricky Powell, and many others to get some of their most inspiring stories on record.

As not all of Fish’s closest fans made it out to the exhibition, we have collaborated on the “Listen and Learn” app, bringing the interactive experience to your iPad and iPhone and bring new life to Fish’s “story paintings” and most experimental gallery show to date. The app comes bundled with 30 images of Fish’s paintings and 1.5 hours of audio stories that accompanied and inspired each piece. The “Listen and Learn” app also comes with a handful of videos and gallery of images from Fish’s exhibition.

To kick off the launch of the “Listen and Learn” app, Fish has illustrated (in black Sharpie) on the back of a brand new iPad 2, being given away now on Upper Playground’s Facebook page. To enter the contest, simply include your email address in the contest link on the lower left side of the Upper Playground Facebook page. One winner at random will get a Fish customized iPad 2. The contest runs through December 31, 2011.

Swiss Photobooks from 1927 to the Present @ Fotostiftung Schweiz, Zürich

November 21st, 2011

979bca79df05x872.jpg Swiss Photobooks from 1927 to the Present @ Fotostiftung Schweiz, Zürich unitl february swiss photobooks print or poster photograph over the course individual fotostiftung schweiz exhibition citrus report

Part of us wants to see this just because we know any sort of Swiss Design in terms of print or poster art is going to be great. And this poster is really nicely done.

“Since the late 1920s – when it became possible to print photographs in high quality – the book has repeatedly proved itself to be an ideal platform for the presentation of photographic works. Books have not only contributed to the dissemination and transmission of photography but also facilitated the integration of the individual image into a meaningful context or sequence.

The exhibition is based on an extensive research project in which hundreds, in part long-forgotten photobooks were brought together and critically examined. The selection of works resulting from this process forms the backbone of this new history of Swiss photography, which is also being published as a book.

“The publication presents the individual works with extensive picture spreads and texts by 23 authors – a chronological reference work that also traces the process that has seen the photograph change from a document into a means of subjective and artistic expression.

“With the help of seven thematic areas – homeland, portraiture, mountain photography, the world of work, aerial photography, contemporary history, travel – this exhibition aims at a kind of typology of the Swiss photobook which draws attention to the potential interplay between book and photograph, while also revealing the extent to which modes of expression have altered over the course of time. Concise excerpts from these books exhibited on the walls highlight the basic principle of each photobook – a photograph positioned on a double page still remains an integral part of a larger sequence. The concept, design and reception of photobooks are examined more closely in display cases. A large wall installation is devoted to photobook covers. The photobook is also presented as an object in film form: “reading” illustrated photography books is not just an intellectual but also a sensual act.”

Rene Almanza @ FIFTY24SF Gallery

September 28th, 2011

“Stranger” is a foreigner, a resident alien, one in the house of another as a guest, visitor, or intruder, a person or thing that is unknown or with whom one is unacquainted, one who does not belong to or is kept from the activities of a group, one not privy or party to an act, contract, or title, one that interferes without right.

(9.26.2011) San Francisco – FIFTY24SF Gallery presents a watercolor exhibition by Mexican illustrator and fine artist, Rene Almanza, entitled “Stranger” opening on September 29th, 2011.

This exhibition marks the progression of Rene Almanza’s career from the monochromatic ink-lined work that he has been known for towards the incorporation of paint and colors. Taking a traditional and deliberate approach towards the development of his mediums has always been an important part of Rene’s career; and after feeling like he had expressed all that he can with his line-based style, he felt that the next logical step was to begin to integrate watercolors into his work as part of the process of gradually moving towards incorporating oil and acrylic paints into his pieces.

One of the cornerstones of Rene’s career has been his ability to couple the American style of comic-art illustration and the Oaxacan concept of art. To Rene, the American style is about creating stark optical images that convey overt messages while the Oaxacan opinion on the purpose of art is to create work that expresses the emotion of the artist and leaves room for interpretation. The title of this exhibition is based around the Oaxacan side of this dichotomy, and all the work of the “Stranger” exhibition aims to express the sentiment of being a “resident alien” while leaving the stories behind the work open to the interpretation of the viewer.

The exhibition features 50 pieces measuring 20″ x 18″ using the mediums of pencil and watercolor. All the work also features frames which are hand made in Oaxaca. Rene Almanza’s “Stranger” exhibition features an opening reception on September 29th, at 7:00pm.

Takeshi Murata Opening at Ratio 3 Tonight

April 29th, 2011

7490a89fec05x409.jpg Takeshi Murata Opening at Ratio 3 Tonight viewer usa museum houston flash exhibition design Chicago

We posted a while ago about Takeshi Murata’s “I, Popeye,” film which will have it’s West Coast premiere at ‘Get Your Ass To Mars’ tonight at Ratio 3. Here’s the rest of the press release:

Takeshi Murata: Get Your Ass to Mars
April 29 – June 11, 2011
Ratio 3, 1447 Stevenson Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 USA

Opening reception: Friday, April 29, 2011, 6-8pm.

Ratio 3 is pleased to present Get Your Ass to Mars, new work by Takeshi Murata, on view from April 29 to June 11, 2011.

For this exhibition, Murata will present a new series of prints using imagery rendered entirely on the computer. As in his previous work, Murata uses objects that already exist in the world, playing with their inherent narratives and associations. Murata’s still lifes are composed of arranged objects such as VHS cassette tapes, fruit, skulls, cracked iPhones, musical instruments, and beer bottles. He places these objects in a virtual space that appears eerily real, accentuating their strange relationships with each other as they rest in a timeless abstract space. With these prints, Murata moves in the opposite direction of time-based video, emphasizing stillness, tension and pictorial illusion.

The gallery will also present the West Coast debut of “I, Popeye,” which premiered in 2010 in the exhibition ‘Free’ at the New Museum, New York. By animating Popeye in three dimensions, Murata’s personal interpretation of Popeye casts a dark yet humorous shadow on the iconic cartoon character. As in his previous videos, Murata’s deft control of the image draws the viewer into moments of both wonder and confusion.

Takeshi Murata was born in 1974 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997 with a B.F.A. in Film/Video/Animation. He has had previous solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC , gallery.sora, Tokyo and The Reliance (The Approach), London. His work has been included in exhibitions at the New Museum, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy, Sikemma Jenkins & Co., New York, and Gladstone Gallery, New York. Murata currently lives and works in Saugerties, New York. This is his third solo exhibition with Ratio 3.

GALLERY HOURS: WEDNESDAY – SATURDAY; 11am – 6pm, and by appointment.
