Jeremy Fish and Upper Playground have teamed up to create a new app to bring Fish’s groundbreaking “Listen and Learn” exhibition to your iPad and iPhone.

This past summer at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC, Jeremy Fish created an interactive exhibition, Listen and Learn,  featuring 30 paintings based on stories told my some of Fish’s closest friends and inspirational talents. Each painting was accompanied with headphones to allow visitors to listen to the audio recordings while viewing Jeremy’s visual interpretation of the story on the wall. Fish gathered Snoop Dogg, Aesop Rock, Mike Giant, Lance Mountain, El-P, Ron English, Ricky Powell, and many others to get some of their most inspiring stories on record.

As not all of Fish’s closest fans made it out to the exhibition, we have collaborated on the “Listen and Learn” app, bringing the interactive experience to your iPad and iPhone and bring new life to Fish’s “story paintings” and most experimental gallery show to date. The app comes bundled with 30 images of Fish’s paintings and 1.5 hours of audio stories that accompanied and inspired each piece. The “Listen and Learn” app also comes with a handful of videos and gallery of images from Fish’s exhibition.

Pick up the APP here.

People and the Fish They Look Like

You don’t see this everyday. This is a new series by Ted Sabarese called “Evolution,” where he matches people up with their Fish doppelgangers. It sort of works well, doesn’t it? Sabarese says of the project, ” With all the recent, fiery controversy between evolution, creationism, intelligent design, science, religion, the political left, right, etc., I thought it might be provocative to throw my visual two-cents into the ring. The images beg the question, is it really so difficult to believe we came out from the sea millions and millions of years ago?” That red head just wiggled at us. (via)

What the hell is this Ed Lee Video all about?

October 26th, 2011

Didn’t Ed Lee not want to run at some point? Didn’t he sort of lie to we San Franciscians? (Note to others, Ed Lee is the interim Mayor of SF who is now running for the full time gig.) And although this video is bizarre to a degree we can’t even fathom even with the Internet, and sort of incredible, we kind of don’t know if it is scoring our vote. Had they included the cast of Full House, E-40, Mrs Doubtfire, Jeremy Fish, or that dude in Black Eyed Peas who doesn’t talk, then we might have been sold.

Malthus: Giving You a Meal a Day

June 28th, 2011

9869bebf6d14 PM.png Malthus: Giving You a Meal a Day The Citrus Report really grow population does population malthus kitchens fish provide fish culture

In case the population does really grow like it’s predicted, and we really do run short of food, maybe we should all invest in one of these for our kitchens. The Malthus provides a portion of fish and a side salad daily with an aquaponics system, in which the fish provide fertilizer for the plants and the plants clean water in the tank. Apparently one has been made and 100 more are on the way. If this really works like it’s supposed to, it seems like a pretty great idea.

Jeremy Fish x Snoop Dogg for Joshua Liner Gallery on June 21, 2011

June 8th, 2011

Jeremy Fish has a solo show opening up at Josh Liner in NYC, and the show has some really interesting audio work, including this piece with Snoop Dogg.

As you know, Upper Playground has been working on some various projects with Snoop Dogg, and we are longtime collaborators with Mr. Jeremy Fish. Nice to see them getting along.

“The exhibition features assorted tales from a wide swath of contemporary life—including from artists, skateboarders, rappers, athletes, a stripper, a cop, and a historian—which Fish has reinterpreted in lovingly realized painted works.

For this impressive project, Fish gathered a selection of friends and acquaintances whose rich lives have engendered no end of interesting tales. Most prominent among them is rapper/producer/actor Snoop Dogg, who recounts a story from childhood. In the tale, Snoop is among a select group of neighborhood kids to be bussed to a brand new, highly touted elementary school. Right off, Snoop gets into trouble when he allegedly exposes himself to a female student in the lunch line. The rapper’s account of the principal’s reprimand displays his undisputed gift for storytelling and turning naughty content into witty word games with a humorous twist. In ‘Pulled Out My Worm’, Fish’s painted rendition of the tale, these story elements are incorporated into a baroque-style mirror image of two dog silhouettes, adorned with scrolling filigree, cartoon characters from an American childhood, and neighborhood identifiers.”
