Block Stays Hot – Fillmore x Haight benefit tee

As a lot of you know, there was a 4-alarm fire a couple weeks back in an apartment building on the corner of our block at Fillmore x Haight. It resulted in three businesses losing their space indefinitely, Fecal Face having to move their gallery, and 30 residents losing their apartments along with most of their belongings. The amazing thing has been the out pour of support from the neighborhood for the situation, something we’ve been proud to be part of by donating packs of clothes to each of the residents (just because you lose your stuff, shouldn’t mean you no longer get to look good, right?).

But a lot of people still want to help, so at our Fillmore location we have released this tee and all the proceeds will go to the Haight and Fillmore Fire Fund (it’s set up by the neighborhood association and all the fund are going to be divvied between the people who were effected by the fire, tee is available only at the SF Fillmore location). If you’re not in the area and still want to support, the tee is available through the Fire Fund’s website for anyone who donates $100 or above.

Footage of Haight / Fillmore going up in flames yesterday

September 28th, 2011

Jason and James from our Fillmore store put together some footage of the building next door to us going up in a 3-alarm fire yesterday. All of you that live in SF know that it doesn’t take much for a whole block to burn up in a matter of minutes in this area, so big-ups to SFFD for making sure the Fillmore/Haight block was still standing today.

Let’s really talk about “The Wiggle”

If you recall, we just mentioned it in the San and Escif post but let’s really talk about San Francisco’s bike route from Market St. to Golden Gate Park. Better yet, let’s go to The Wiggle’s Wikipedia page:

The Wiggle is a one-mile, zig-zagging bicycle route from Market Street to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California, that minimizes hilly inclines for bicycle riders. Rising 120 feet (37 m), The Wiggle inclines average 3% and never exceed 6%. The path generally follows the historical route of the long since paved-over Sans Souci Valley watercourse, winding through the Lower Haight neighborhood toward the Panhandle section of Golden Gate Park.[1]

Although the route is primarily used for going up hill (north and west), the city route signs are also posted visible to riders heading down hill. One such rider, pictured, is turning south on Pierce Street from the eastbound direction of Haight Street.

The lower end of the route begins at either end of the Duboce Bikeway in the block of Duboce Avenue just west of Market Street. The elevation is approximately 100 feet (30 m) above sea level. It then moves in a zig-zag toward the northwest along Duboce Avenue, Steiner, Waller, Pierce, Haight, Scott, and Fell Streets to the Panhandle Bikeway, 215 feet (66 m) above sea level. After climbing 50 more feet, the peak of The Wiggle is reached near Stanyan Street at the peninsular drainage divide, i.e., the dividing point between surface water flowing to the San Francisco Bay on the east side and flowing to the Pacific Ocean on the west.[2]

Bicyclists can travel The Wiggle between major eastern and central neighborhoods (such as Downtown, SoMa, The Mission District, The Castro) and major western neighborhoods (including the Panhandle, The Haight, Golden Gate Park,[3] and The Richmond and Sunset Districts).
