Michael Jackson, one year later

It doesn’t really matter what we have to say about Michael Jackson, it has all been written. We weren’t the biggest fans, we stopped as really young kids with Thriller, but a year later, after his passing, there is still a weirdly wonderful moment the night of his passing where we just put on the old Jackson 5 tracks and “Billie Jean,” and just danced around and had a good time. It was a celebration of the songs.  That is how we want to remember his life, just making you feel good through music. Its dumb and simplistic, but sometimes that is enough.

Highway 61 Revisited features the best opening track in the history of popular music, not only because it flips the entire script on one man’s career, but it flipped the script on an entire decade of music. If you open an album up with “Like a Rolling Stone,” you really don’t have to anything else with your life… but then Bob Dylan came to the party with Blonde on Blonde the next year, so he wins the Hall of Fame award.

Stanley Donwood talks about new work that may be in the show @ FIFTY24SF Gallery

FIFTY24SF Gallery just posted a new update about Stanley Donwood and his upcoming show at the gallery in San Francisco this Fall. For those of you who don’t know, Stanley can write. Here is a little piece from his site:

Beginning to explain

Forgive me if you’ve heard some of this before.
This starts in L.A. I found myself there once, trying to make artwork. It was the first time I had been to the west coast of America.
Part of the massive scale of Los Angeles involves the many advertising materials employed along the multilane highways that dissect the built environment.
I was in the car with my notebook, and for something to do I was writing down what all these signs and advertisements had to say. I realised that they only used a very few colours, and the colours were bold, brash, and used in very visually compelling combinations. About ninety per cent of the messages that flicked past my retinas were using seven colours.
I noted these colours down; red, green, blue, yellow, orange, black and white. All, I think, made from pigments derived from the petrochemical industry, the same hydrocarbon trade that has made modern Los Angeles possible. The colours were red, green, blue, yellow, orange, black and white. I decided to paint using these colours, straight from the tub.
This was some time ago, back in 2003, I think.
I made the paintings for Radiohead’s album called ‘Hail to the Thief’ with these colours, and I continued to use them for several projects afterwards. I find them, in combination, both deeply attractive and subtly distressing.

More recently (although, to my sorrow, no longer) I received several spam emails promising me a better sex life, a bigger penis and something called polynominal slosh prowess. I collected these emails. When they inexplicably stopped, they were replaced with spam emails offering me the chance to buy foreclosed homes as bargain prices. A cheap property from other peoples’ misery, you could say. I collected these emails too. And emails that purported to come from the impoverished relatives of African presidents.
What interested me about the emails (apart from the promise of wealth, cheap luxury housing and the life of a porn star) was the way that the words in them functioned; just a glance at the title of an email was enough to tell what sort of contents it would hold; much as the colours of L.A. grabbed the visual cortex these words seemed intended to grab the linguistic cortex.
I have seven colours, and I have a lot of words.

Ekundayo’s life story is a very unique one (basically his mother and father split and he spent 7 years toted along with his dad on the run until his father passed away and he lived with his sister where he discovered his uncle’s black book that changed his life). Ekundayo’s work illustrates the sacrifices we make in the pursuit of fulfillment, while simultaneously questioning the actions taken to attain it.

Peter Orlovsky — 1933 – 2010

I was going to write something over-arching, a text containing his life as the muse for Ginsberg, his inspirations for ‘Howl’ and his position within the Beat canon amongst such luminaries of the genre as Burroughs, Corso, Kerouac and Cassady. I was going to write of his relationships with Robert Frank, Warhol and Dylan-

Instead,  I opened a book of poems of his, finding myself reading the introduction that Gregory Corso wrote and thought that nothing could be added as an obituary; that this celebration in text from one beat poet describing another was better suited than a fact-filled sheet of a timeline of someone’s life:

“Orlovsky was the kind of natural voice W.C.W. believed America would one day sound. I remember him praising Peter’s first poem: “Nothing English about it — pure American.” That was twenty years ago. Now, twenty years hence, Peter has voiced a volume of poems, pure Americana, and unlike any American sound. Bucolic and sexual, these poems are replicate of his farmer produce (organic and natural) and of his love for the male and female of his heart’s desire.

He hails the human asshole as divine — He offers humankind an anatomical compassion for that bodiy part long maligned, shame-wracked, and poetically neglect.
Keep it clean in between is a golden define of self-respect. The angel without wings is with asshole a reality. The angel with wings is a painted thing, a dream. The dual asshole: bucolic and sexual. What comes out, he believes, aught benefit the fields not the seas, aught fertilize not pollute -
What goes in, he lauds as a variable of sex not solely of homosexual kind -
The lovers of callipygian joy are universal.

Peter is an original; a refined spirit … regard: ‘neath his poetic capote nothing primitive holds claim – An agricultural romantic, the Shellean farmer astride his Pegasusian tractor re-poems the earth with trees of berry and roots of honey; whose dirtian hands scribe verses of soy, odes of harvest; whose hymns to redolent shovels of manure nourish the fields that so nourish us, both in body meal and the cosmetics of soul.”

A Dream of Magic Beans and Facebook Friends by Porous Walker

May 30th, 2010

a2b0cb04367641 n.jpg A Dream of Magic Beans and Facebook Friends by Porous Walker remembering parade News Life FIFTY24SF dream drawing birds

I have a show opening on June 4 at FIFTY24SF gallery in San Francisco.

I named the show, Haricots Magiques, magic beans, it is all about this dream I recently had, where I was in France and a french farmer gave me some magic beans, I ate them, and he freaked out and told me, I was supposed to have planted them. It was a great vivid dream, because I starting seeing all kinds of things, especially a bird with a string attached to it carrying a huge pulsating color ball, and attached to that were streamers, flags, and all of these clouds, imagine one of those airplanes that fly with the advertising banners behind them, only the ‘banner’ was made up of many colorful clouds, etc. and was as long as a skyscraper is tall. Within the banner were several colorful clouds depicting scenes and also there were a bunch of birds flying saying their names out loud, someone whispered to me that the birds were my ‘friends’ on the facebook.

Than, after it flew by, there was a screening of a movie, only they had figured out how to project a movie against the night sky, so that everyone could watch it from their backyards, roofs, etc. it was amazing. The movie was pinnochio, and they said that it was a new form of movie watching, in LSD, but you didn’t need glasses like 3D. Tripinnochio.

I haven’t done any drugs in a long long time, so this recent dream was quite interesting.
At the end of my remembering of the dream, I was shown a video of several monarch butterflies and told that this is the symbol for my time of dying, and when I see this scene, my life will soon be at its end. More beautiful than scary, and somehow, the parade of imagery in the sky is connected.

Either way, I drew all of the birds today and each one is a portrait of my ‘friends’. I hope you can make it to the Art show to see the drawing in person and try to find yourself, or just simply delete our ‘friendship’ because this just feels like a gimmicky marketing trick.
Thanks.
All the best,
Porous Walker

Humans like to play games. Kids like to play video games. Adults like video games. People love social networking, Kids love social networking. This is basically what we all know. The future is going to be different. Way different, but nothing that evolution doesn’t already tell us. Just like the headline where we found this… “the future of games and reality and weirdness and points and things like that…”

The corporations will figure it out, and technology will figure it out. How to monetize and control EVERY aspect of our lives. It will a comedy, and a tragedy, all in one.

The video is 28 minutes, we know its long, but worth your time.

I grew up in los angeles watching movies, I’d go out the emergency exit at sparkys in the Beverly center, go up to the roof, and sneak into every movie, one summer I watched point break 10 times. It’s funny to think there’s gonna be a movie about me showing in L.A. but there is, it’s called dirty hands, and it’s coming soon
After a most triumphant run of the film festivals, the film I never want my mother to see, ran a huge party foul by not clearing any of the music rights, the entire movie was cut to the most awesome music, and none of the songs could be used, so we had james jean, joe hahn, hightower, renson and dr. luke come contribute in giant ways to add new next level beats and music to the movie, to the people who already saw dirty hands in the theater that’s the only time youll ever see that version, the new cut has arrived! Upperplayground presents dirty hands,
Dirty hands will be playing for a limited time in theaters ,April 30 to May 6 at the Sunset 5 in los angeles, and then move on to SF for showings from May 21 – May 27. Check Upper Playground for more information as the dates approach.

when I was a young lost teen , I overheard a slumlord/pimp tell one of his ho’s “ real g’s never wake up before noon, that’s for all those other mother fuckers out there.” As soon as I heard that ,even though
I really didn’t know what it was, I knew I wanted to be… a real “g” . instead I really got into
Charles Bukowski, like a lot of young lost teens, mostly through my older brother jimmy,
he had shoplifted these Robert crumb comics, where Crumb illustrated some bukowski stories about drinking
gambling and fucking , so of course we were hooked, Soon we were shop lifitng all of Bukowski’ books,
one day while reading one of his books I ran
into this line …”Never get out of bed before noon.”
I haven’t woken up before noon since 1997
because a pimp and bukowski told me so.
Bukowski wrote and said so many things that shaped my world view and opinions on life, Even when I was lost in the jungles and working in Israel , reading bukowski always made me feel like I was back at home in L.A.
he put into words what was so heavy on my mind and chest and that’s what all great artists do.
Here’s one more thing he wrote that changed everything for me.
“If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.
This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind.
It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench.
It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery–isolation. Isolation is
the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it.
And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything
else you can imagine. If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that.
You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight
to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.”
— Charles Bukowski
Here is a watercolor I did of the late great charles bukowski who saved my life through his words.
