Dave Aju
October 19th, 2010
Posted from The Citrus Report
You’re in a club dancing it up with your friends, or turning up the speakers at a house party, and that same song is in your bones. It’s Dave Aju. His songs are eerily familiar and infectious. It could be off his new album, Open Wide, in which Marc Barrite uses only the sounds of his mouth to produce music. And he pulls it off, probably due to the ol’ days (or nights) spitting with his friends. Open Wide has been hailed as the best debut album of the year, and we are proud of our local boy.
Marc naturally feels comfortable with all genres of music and is ready to take risks. Maybe because his father played jazz trumpet with the greats in the 50’s and 60’s, or because one brother is a rock singer and the other a hip-hop DJ. Marc breaks down the electronica movements in Europe, the changing SF scene, and what the bloggers are chewing on from his new album. —Kirsten Incorvia
Q: Are you satisfied with aftermath of your recent debut album, Open Wide?
Yeah, definitely. It’s my first album so expectations aren’t too high, and the concept and diversity of the album has polarized people a bit. A lot of everyday folks, music heads, and fellow producers have been very supportive which is really cool. What’s even better is that, on the flipside, the album’s distinct styles provide a kind of code to decipher people, so the track that someone’s not feeling will say a lot more about them than they realize. I’m also getting a good laugh at some young critics and blogger-types that are like “it’s just a gimmick” or “didn’t Bobby McFerrin/Herbert/Bjork already do this?” Haha, gotta love that shit. It’s new to me because 12″ releases don’t get that kind of attention.
Q: What equipment did you use to produce Open Wide?
A sequencer, two samplers, a midi keyboard, a mic, my lips, tongue, teeth, and voice.
Q: Do you prefer performing live or working alone in your studio?
It depends on my mood, but since the product of studio work is really what drives everything else, I’d have to lean that way overall. They’re two sides of the same coin though, and performing tends to build itself up- like if I’m not feeling a certain crowd, venue, or just feeling shitty at a gig, I can usually pull through just from the vibe and adrenaline. But the opposite can be crazy too- feeling all juiced alone in the studio- either some wild inspiration comes from of it or I have to get out and grab a drink with someone.
Q: What is the best venue in the city for techno?
Techno you say? Hmm. A place called Bahia Cabana on Market St, 10 years ago? I mean, there are a lot of venues that promote “techno” parties now, but it will really depend on what guest they flew in and what strain of the music you and the promoters are into. Some decent parties go down these days at places like Mighty, the EndUp, and Mezzanine, but it can easily feel more like blah commercial clubs compared to some underground spots and the wild, innovative, and funky shit you heard at places like the Bahia. 222 Hyde was a good spot for awhile, but I guess their days are done too.

Albums should be $1.50, people would probably buy them
October 18th, 2010

We are not talking about the .99 cent Katy Perry single buying crowd, because what is left of the music industry is relying on .99 cent buys on iTunes because they can’t find talent if it slapped them on the ass, and they have nurtured poor talent and poor decisions (any “American Idol” winner, rap-rock, Kid Rock, Kings of Leon, etc, etc) that not one consumer wants to buy a full album anymore. Seriously, think of one, just one goddamn album pumped out by the major record labels over the past 5-6 years you would have bought for $15.99… probably hard to find one, sadly.
So, we agree with Rob Dickens, who used to run Warner Music in the UK, who says albums should cost $1.50. Dickens said this at The City music conference, where he argued “that in order for record labels to combat piracy and boost sales, the music industry must make an album just as impulsive of a buy as a single is today. Lowering album prices, he explained, would spark an exponential increase in sales. What we need is a revolution. What we’ve got is an erosion.”
The music industry created this scenario where people could care less about music because the industry could care less about our intelligence and what we as consumers perceived to be music we wanted to spend money on. So, you lower our expectations, we want to pay $1.50.

Sure, music festivals make us nervous and a little on the claustrophobic side, but if we were going to Treasure Island Music Festival this weekend in San Francisco, Four Tet, Belle and Sebastian, and Die Antwoord would be on our list of bands to check out. Today, we give a list of the Top 10 songs we hope our friends here in the middle of San Francisco Bay this weekend. Enjoy. —The Citrus Report staff

Someone just challenged Lady Gaga to a $1M singing contest
October 13th, 2010

Internet sensation Alisa Apps, who has yet to release an album but will soon to so, is challenging Lady Gaga to a $1 million singing contest. To which Lady Gaga probably replied, “I already pay people $1m to sing for me and make me sound good.”
Apps, who has some really boring marketing team because this is such an obvious ‘we have young star, how do we make her famous’ ploy, had this to say, “I feel sorry for Lady GaGa, she’s just a plastic doll generated by the music money marketing machine,” she said in a statement sent out by her marketing/publicity team. “This contest gives people a chance to choose which they prefer – plastic or real.”

Video: Chip Tha Ripper – “Whoa”
October 3rd, 2010
Posted from The Citrus Report
By no means is this video new, nor the song, but we’d like to put this up as a wake up call. For those still sleeping on Chip, wake up. The rapper out of Cleveland has been doing big things, and with his forthcoming album, “Gift Raps” it’s reasonable to say that many hip-hop heads are holding their breaths. Chip comes consistently hard on every track, and with Chuck English (of the Cool Kids) producing Chip’s upcoming album, it’s reasonable to assume that there will be more of the same bangers. Stay on the lookout for Gift Raps and definitely check out The Cleveland Show if you haven’t already.
Props to Illroots for the vid.

Bugatti Boyz (Diddy x Rick Ross) – Another One
October 3rd, 2010
Posted from The Citrus Report
These two have been doing some big things together, so why not keep going with what’s good? Not to knock what he’s doing, but it seems quite possible that Diddy’s lyrics were written by Rick Ross. Despite the matching flow and lyricism, the beat pounds, and the overall feel of the song is nice. Definitely take a listen and let us know what you think.
