First Friday: The Shins “Kissing The Lipless”

December 16th, 2011

Even though the Shins have a new album set to be released in the next few months, we don’t think James Mercer can top the pop magic that was Chutes Too Narrow. “Kissing the Lipless” opened it up, and established Mercer has the penultimate indie-pop star of the moment that was 2003.

Our favorite Oxford band, Radiohead, have had a busy year of releasing music and then not promoting it until last week. And then came the news of Thom’s new solo project album with Atoms for Peace (a birdie had told us about that a few months ago), and then Mr. Yorke told Rolling Stone the band had news songs and was going studio bound this winter. “It would be fun to have them ready when we go to play next year. I don’t know how we would release them.” Yorke told RS. “It would be nice to make it all part of the flow and just enjoy it – not think about it too much.” Well, we just went 6-12.

Sunday Shuffle: Seapony “Blue Star”

June 5th, 2011

This is what Seattle sounds like in 2011, or at least, if you are band called Seapony who has listened to great records your whole life and have found a good sound out of it all. This is from their new album, Go With Me, and we like this song, “Blue Star.”

You will see this photo/photo shoot from Radiohead a lot in the coming year

You all know we are shitfaced excited about the newest Radiohead album, The King of Limbs, being released this Saturday, a full 5 days after they announced there was even an album. Shitfaced. Excited. We are nerding out on forums, reading blogs from unreliable sources, doing all the things that happens in 2011 when something we actually know nothing about is about to be realized. It is really fucking hard to create excitement for anything in 2011, and Radiohead has done it with one lo-fi website, an album with no announced tracklisting, maybe cover art, buying it via Mp3, and claiming they have the first “newspaper album.”

This is the press picture that was released today of the band, shot by Sebastian Edge. It has a Beatles vibe to it, a group of people at the top of their game, doing it for years, and taking a photo in the English countryside. They almost looked costumed, but seeing that Radiohead have never been costumed in a photo shoot, we assume they are just dressing like this now.

So, get ready for the full onslaught of Radiohead news in coming weeks. . . .

After releasing what many believed to be the album of 2010 and the album of his career, Kanye West is going to back up My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with an album for Summer 2011. We knew Kanye and Jay-Z were releasing the collab album Watch the Throne for March 2011, but to think that Kanye spent Sunday watching the Bears game from the studio means this is no joke. He is going for it again. And it is going to be good, again.

And, Kanye has his single, “All of the Lights,” being released next week. Here is to the jerk-off not taking work off (had to do it, couldn’t resist).

We won’t get rid of Thom Yorke Tuesday going into 2011, because there is plenty of Radiohead to go in the new year, plus the rumor of a new album in the works.

But we go old-school today, old in the 1995 The Bends sort of old. We can’t believe we haven’t gone with “Black Star” this year, but this is one of our all-time favorite tracks from our junior high years… enjoy.

First and Final Friday: Women “Public Strain”

This has been one of our favorite albums of the year, just a solid rock album from this Canadian four-piece, whom we thought heard broke up recently, but we can’t confirm. Women have won us over now on two albums, but the final track, “Eyesore,” is a just a beautiful, 60s jingle to anthem closer. Public Strain opens with “Can’t You See,” and closes with “Eyesore.” Enjoy.

Beastie Boys, “Hot Sauce Committee, Pt 2,” due out Spring 2011

The Beastie Boys have sacked the idea of a Hot Sauce Committee, Pt 1 (which was delayed due to MCA’s cancer diagnosis), and are instead going to Hot Sauce Committee, Pt 2, due out this Spring 2011.

We just read MCA’s blog post, “MCA wrote: “Strange but true, the final sequence for Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 works best with all its songs replaced by the 16 tracks we originally had lined up in pretty much the same order we had them in for Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1. So we’ve come full circle.”

Yes, yes they have. Interesting to see what is up with the royalty of NYC music…
