Supreme “Anatomy of a Global Streetwear Cult”

January 11th, 2012

539f49a90723f3eb.jpg Supreme “Anatomy of a Global Streetwear Cult” used the word supreme nyc latest from the latest flash video fashion 032c fashion business 032c

Something about this two-part article, and the fact that the author used the word “pragmatic” twice in back-to-back paragraphs, makes it a tad too laudatory to be completely honest journalism. But this read, from the latest 032c and published on Business of Fashion, talks about the cult-like and fashion-defining brand that is NYC’s Supreme. It’s interesting, to say the least, especially the history and how important the early 1990s is in the overall genres of fashion.

Swampy in Brooklyn

Just a little something we passed by near the Williamsburg Bridge this weekend. We don’t mind seeing a Swampy piece on the East Coast, and even though we had seen this one a few times it seems on Flickr or around the Internet, this is just a nice clean, untouched piece on a side-street in the middle of Williamsburg. With the NYC Marathon going off a few blocks away, we got pushed down by the water, and caught it…

Walton Ford “I DON’T LIKE TO LOOK AT HIM, JACK. IT MAKES ME THINK OF THAT AWFUL DAY ON THE ISLAND.” @ Paul Kasmin, NYC

We are big fans of Walton Ford, because we have always felt that if you were an alien dropped on Earth and told to look at a bunch of fine art, you would think that the Massachusetts-based artist was from the 1800s. There is an elegance and classic look to his work that just stands the test of time. He has a new solo show of work up at Paul Kasmin in NYC, called “I DON’T LIKE TO LOOK AT HIM, JACK. IT MAKES ME THINK OF THAT AWFUL DAY ON THE ISLAND.” The show is open now.

These nine paintings are grouped into two series of work: one comprising three portraits of King Kong; and the other six meditations on a passage from the memoirs of the ornithologist John James Audubon (1785- 1851). Both series were painted in 2011, and are consistent with Ford’s practice of expanding the visual language and narrative scope of traditional natural history painting.

Richard Serra @ San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

We do feel it rare to be able to see a traveling exhibition at two consecutive venues. This past summer, we visited Richard Serra’s Drawing at the MET in NYC, but the buzz in the building had been for the Alexander McQueen exhibition, which was gaining momentum and a labyrinth of lines throughout the building. Our experience with Serra was quiet, but dramatic. The work, of course, was strong, and in its simple construction and arrangement, had a unique language all to its own. But we felt it wasn’t given the proper space to breath.

The move to the SFMoMA proves to be the right conditions for which to see Serra’s work. The natural light, the higher ceilings, and bigger rooms allow for Serra’s drawings and sculptures to exist as they should. We always imagined Serra’s sculptures existing in old industrial warehouses, in large, open spaces that put scale and materials in focus. His drawings, some sketches, some full thoughts, some just examinations of the human’s ability to connect with shapes, angles, and simple construction need their own rooms to thrive.

If you have a chance to stop by Serra’s retrospective, we recommend going in the afternoon during the week, with few people interrupting the experience. Its solitary, and its own universe. Just enjoy it. —Raymond Brown / The Citrus Report

Tim Biskup at THIS Los Angeles

October 11th, 2011

2410a8713305x395.jpg Tim Biskup at THIS Los Angeles work unavoidable paintings nyc north figueroa News Life from the expert friday october citrus report

Tim Biskup’s solo exhibition Former State opens this Friday October 14th at THIS Los Angeles and we’re super excited to see this new body of work.

About the exhibit:

Tim Biskup’s new collection of paintings looks strangely familiar. Maybe it’s the unavoidable Biskup-ness of his color palate or the uncomfortable, slightly “off” expressions of his characters. Whatever it is, it is intentional. This exhibition was carefully planned out from the very beginning of it’s conception. Something that skews dramatically from
Biskup’s improvisational past. It’s not like he hasn’t put a lot of thought into his shows (His last NYC show was accompanied by a 60 page book of text.). The difference here is the level of focus. The show is almost entirely made up of large-scale paintings in the artist’s polygonal style. To add another layer of unity, the subjects are a series of small mask-like heads. These are not the carefully produced characters that make up his vast array of vinyl figures, but small, roughy hewn, crudely painted things that the artist sculpted himself. The twist comes from the expert craft and expansive scale of the paintings. To see those spontaneous lumps turned into carefully composed geometric images with months of meticulous paint application going into their creation is quite surreal. The original sculptures will be displayed (and sold) along with the paintings. Thus the title of the show. But the title also refers to the growth that Tim Biskup
has gone through over the last 10 years. Both in his work and in his life. It seemed at one point that we would never see characters popping up in his work again, but now he’s gone back to his roots to re-examine and re-invent his past. What he’s come up with is a refined, elegant and mature version of his former state.

Opening Reception: October 14th, 7-10pm

5906 North Figueroa Street
Los Angeles, CA 90042.

We nerdy Radiohead fans were already excited about Radiohead coming to play SNL and Colbert this week. That was exciting enough. Now if you live in the NYC area, you can see the band play two shows at the great Roseland Ballroom on September 28 & 29. And in true, nearly annoying fashion, the shows go on sale on September 26th. So good luck with allllll that.

We evolved out of it for a reason. Its a nasty place.

David Byrne’s Got the Whole World Under the High Line

September 13th, 2011

Starting on the evening of September 15, in NYC underneath the High Line, David Byrne, formerly of the Talking Heads, will be creating pulsating sounds from speakers inside a “48-by-20-foot inflatable globe, pumped up against the High Line’s steel framework, like an exercise ball smushed under a coffee table.” (via NYMag). As the Mag notes about the project and what Byrne had to work with, “The piece needed to withstand the weather; it needed to interact with the High Line; it needed to stand out from its surroundings; it needed to entice passersby; it needed to be temporary (and thus somewhat inexpensive); and it needed to be relatively PG.” So a globe it is. Can’t wait to see it.
