All we know is the “Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) are now targeting sites that provide the songs for free, including songs from Radiohead’s In Rainbows, which the band gave away as “pay what you want” in 2007 on their website.

We have never really known Radiohead’s stance on free music sharing, but we do know they always wanted to get out of the ancient record industry machine, and pay what you want was sort of a big fuck you to the industry. But they did go on to sign with labels that do use the machine, so apparently no matter how big you are, if you are on the radio, and you want to make physical compact discs, you are stuck in the machine.

But the Guardian writes, “There’s nothing new here: the RIAA has been chasing filesharers for years. But would Radiohead really pursue bloggers who post songs from an album the band once gave away? And, more importantly, do the RIAA and IFPI have any right to represent a band who quit their major label, EMI, to go it alone?

The answer to both of these questions is: probably.

Waiting on a clever Thom Yorke blog post…. to rebut or explain.

Thom Yorke Tuesday: Radiohead “Pearly”

This is late 1990’s alternative progressive rock if there ever was. The great track that was supposed to be on Ok Computer, “Pearly” ended up coming out on one of the greatest EPs of the last 20 years, the Airbag: How Am I Driving? EP. And it opens with one of Radiohead’s greatest lyrics: “How’d you get your teeth so pearly?”

Awesome. You think Muse learned something from this song?

We were talking about dub the other day, and that got us to thinking about who we know that really likes dub, and then we realized that Thom Yorke of Radiohead is a huge dubstep fan, and that he did a track with Modeselektor, which is more of an electro-glitch band, but it just got us thinking of “The White Flash.” Enjoy.

CurrentTV Artist Profile on FIFTY24SF Upcoming Artist Stanley Donwood

July 26th, 2010

Here’s a nice overview profile on Stanley Donwood, who will be showing at the FIFTY24SF Gallery come September. If you recognize some of the work it happens to be because Stanley does all the visual art for the band Radiohead. They play music with guitars, drums, bass, and electronic noises.

Feels like we haven’t had a proper Radiohead album track in a bit, and what better than The Bends classic, “Nice Dream.” This was the era in which Radiohead would name songs exactly they way they felt, as in, this song feels like an oddly serene nice dream. Hence the song title.

This is also one of those tracks the band never plays live, and you just … don’t … know… why….

Well, if you do artwork for the band for most of their career, they should help you out a bit, right? Radiohead posted on their blog this picture of Thom Yorke helping Stanley with some painting. And with Mr Donwood headed to SF and his show at FIFTY24SF, this is all very exciting.

Thom Yorke Tuesday: “Killer Cars” acoustic

An oddly great era for Radiohead fans, even if the band sort of disregards the Pablo Honey-era by never playing a song live from that album. Sure, “Creep” gets tossed in for fun once a tour, and “Lurgee” showed up a few times, but Pablo is the step-child Radiohead doesn’t like to talk about. But, “Killer Cars” was a great B-side, and the acoustic / live version was even better. Thom Yorke fans know that Thom isn’t the biggest car person, in the fact that he has written a lot of lyrics about car crashes. This is a great one. Enjoy
