Shepard does a nice look for the annual TIME Magazine “Person of the Year” cover. The Protester won this year. And to think, we thought it was going to be Ryan Braun, or David Stern, or Herman Cain.
Obey: The Rise Video

THE RISE from OBEY CLOTHING on Vimeo.
We haven’t written about Shepard Fairey and his Obey line in the past, but its a lot easier sometimes to get a round up in video form. Which this is. A video, about Obey. Nevermind the Urban Outfitters aspect of this, too.

Art in the Streets
April 15th, 2011
Yes, we were lucky enough to attend the opening party for the what appears to become seminal “Art In the Streets” show at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown Los Angeles last night. There was A LOT to see, overwhelming at times, but when we started to think it was all a bit too much, we went back into REAS/ESPO/TWIST’s Street Market, or Swoon’s room, or Banksy’s space, or the Drugs Crew wall, or LEE’s pieces, or Chaz Bojorquez’s mural, or Mister Cartoon’s wall, or Margaret Kilgallen’s installation, or Rammellzee’s room, or the timeline, or Os Gemeos room, or Martha Cooper’s photos, and you realized it was all perfectly fitting and epic. —The Citrus Report staff

“Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die” at Subliminal Projects
March 24th, 2011
This looks like is a really awesome show at Subliminal Projects in LA. Too Fast To Live, Too Young To Die is a group show curated by Katherine B. Cone and Jon Cournoyer that spotlights some important photos and art from the early California punk and hardcore scenes. The list of artist include Raymond Pettibon, Shepard Fairey, Glen E. Friedman, Jenny Lens, Dave Markey, Jordan Schwartz and Winston Smith. Shepard has a couple collaborations with Richard Pettibon that look really good. The show closes this week so if you’re in LA go check it before it comes down.

When graffiti is removed from graffiti
March 1st, 2011
We always get mixed messages with graffiti, and this story pretty much sums it up. Shepard Fairey’s mural in Philadelphia was graffiti’d over, and it made Lauren Cassady so pissed she buffed the illegal graffiti off the wheatpaste. The article doesn’t really state whether Fairey’s piece was legal or not, but it looks like it may have been legal.
As the article mentions, “After seeing photos of the tagged mural, Cassady, a professional art conservator, volunteered to come to the corner of Frankford Avenue and Norris Street two days per week to remove the graffiti.
To remove the spray paint and marker used to make the graffiti, Cassady sits on a bucket in front of the mural, slowly dabbing the tagged portion of it with a solvent-soaked Q-Tip.
“It’s a very slow process,” said Cassady. “You can’t use a lot of solvent at a time, or else you will harm the original work.”
She won’t be able to remove the tag completely, but hopes to get the mural as close to its original state as possible.

Manhole art in Milan
November 15th, 2010
Posted from The Citrus Report
This is better than not having manhole art in Milan. Shepard Fairey, The London Police, and Invader, in conjunction with Don Gallery, have set up these manhole cover art pieces around Milan, Italy. Sort of a cool concept that a place like San Francisco should get involved in.
