Perhaps better known as the Underdog King of the moment, Italian street artist Blu just released a new DVD of animations, time-lapses and others works, the first full collection of his video works every produced. There were two versions available, signed and unsigned, but because of the whole “Blu is very talented and popular and he was involved in the now infamous Deitch MOCA buffing,” those signed versions of the DVD are long, long gone.
Part of us thinks that Valencia, Spain’s Escif is old-school. He is showing up at the right party (Pictures on Walls, Montana Gallery Barcelona, Art Basel Miami 2010), but his spirit is definitely of philosophical connections and scenarios. Sure, he could have showed up at Basel and painted his signature characters on walls and blown everyone away with his simple poetic nature, but instead he went big bold letters and reminded all the artists and attendees what Basel is really “all about.” We applaud the piece, and it was one of our favorite things of note at Basel.
As we announced earlier this week, Escif and San will be in our FIFTY24SF Gallery this Summer (June-July 2011 to be exact), and we look forward to seeing Escif’s work in person and the evolution of his extremely productive 2010.

You have heard the story, MOCA wants Blu to paint mural, Blu paints mural, MOCA paints over it, MOCA is run by Jeffrey Deitch, Blu is hailed as a victim of hypocrisy, Deitch has to defend his first major exhibit that will be all about Street Art after he buffs the very art that he is trying to canonize.
MOCA has released a statement, used words like inappropriate and insensitive. What? Painting a mural of coffins with American dollars draped upon them instead of the traditional American flag draped coffins of American soldiers coming home, with said wall across from a Veteran’s building is insensitive?
Who said Street Art was sensitive, though?
The LA Times has Deitch quoted: “Look at my gallery website — I have supported protest art more than just about any other mainstream gallery in the country,” Deitch added. “But as a steward of a public institution, I have to balance a different set of priorities — standing up for artists and also considering the sensitivities of the community.”
Something tells us that Blu doesn’t really care about Deitch Projects traditions or insensitivity. The dude just brought some good shit to the US.

Escif explains to everyone how Jeffrey Deitch reacted when he saw Blu’s mural.
Herbert Baglione’s show at Winterlong Galerie in France has now opened, and we just received photos from the show of what Herbert put together for the show. A very interesting installation inside and out from the looks of it. The show is up through December 23rd, if you happen to be in Niort.

Well, the MOCA is putting on the biggest street art exhibition ever, and they ask one of the rising names in street art, Blu to paint a mural for said “Art In the Streets” exhibition, and when he creates a controversial mural that sits across from some Veteran’s building, it gets buffed.
Yep, Blu got buffed by the MOCA after being invited to paint at the MOCA, less than 24 hours after finishing the piece.
Maybe American $$ on coffins across from a Veteran’s building is a bit harsh?

Today, we preview some of the great drawings and two mural pieces that Ericailcane, the Italian artist and street muralist, has ready for his solo show, We Were Living In the Woods, at San Francisco’s FIFTY24SF Gallery. The show opens tonight and goes through December 19th. A fitting end of the year. . .

We prepped a few walls for Ericailcane last night in the Lower Haight. Before he begins to paint we thought we’d take a look at some of the collaborative work he’s done. With fellow contemporaries Blu, Sam3, San and Lucy Mclauchlan, Erica’s large-scale murals have played a key role in contributing to an increasingly progressive and elaborate street art and mural movement occurring in Europe over the past 5 years.

Soon to be FIFTY24SF Gallery artist Erica Il Cane (coming November 2010) and former FIFTY24SF artist Lucy McLauchlan just painted a wall together in the beautiful city of Lisboa (Lisbon), Portugal. Stick2Target posted some more abstract/atmosphere pictures of the process and building that was painted by the two for the Crono Project.
