We saw some of the classic, pre-Gap, Ziegler owned Banana Republic catalogs on Archival Clothing recently, and it made us long for the day when the Marin County brand was a tad more specialty. These are some classic illustrated catalog covers, perhaps even drawn by the Ziegler’s themselves.

If you surf at all, I’m sure you noticed the biggest south swell all summer has been lighting up the entire California coast. We personally went down to Baja to get away from the crowded mayhem of the Golden State and returned just in time to catch some waves at Black’s in San Diego (we even got to use our semi-gun, in the summer!). If you do surf and you somehow missed this swell, go get the tail end of it, now.

It’s always nice to find photographs from the past, sometimes they spark curiosity, some times they make you wish you had a legit time machine. David Lyon crafted a collection of photographs properly named “Here Is What Brooklyn Was Like In The Summer of 1974.” So put aside 5 minutes, or an hour, and take a look at what Brooklyn was like in the summer of 1974.

Summertime Tip #6: Outdoor Music Festivals

August 12th, 2011

I know it’s hot, and there’s a lot of people, and you seem to be always looking for a lighter and/or a schedule, but outdoor music festivals are the mega music events of the summer. They’re an immediate definition of style and culture for that moment in time, a physical world where music exists. You see new things and new people, experience music outside your comfort zone, and plus, shit like this can go down.

On that note, Samuel Clemens did not say “The Coldest Winter I Ever Spent was a Summer in San Francisco”

As much as we enjoy San Francisco tourists and natives alike misquoting Mark Twain, he never actually said that.  He did however say this about Paris:

…anywhere is better than Paris. Paris the cold, Paris the drizzly, Paris the rainy, Paris the damnable. More than a hundred years ago somebody asked Quin, “Did you ever see such a winter in all your life before?” “Yes,” said he, “Last summer.” I judge he spent his summer in Paris. Let us change the proverb; Let us say all bad Americans go to Paris when they die. No, let us not say it for this adds a new horror to Immortality.
- letter to Lucius Fairchild, 28 April 1880, reprinted in Mark Twain, The Letter Writer

In keeping with the theme of the Report this week’s Summertime Tip is going out to a ball game. We know the game hasn’t been the same in the modern era, but still, sunflower seeds and overpriced draft light beer, doesn’t that still say America? and Summer? Get out there, and root for the home team, as they say.

And not to over do it with the All-Star nostalgia, but here’s the first home run in an All Star game, back when PEDs were whiskey and cigars. 1933, The Babe.
