Con Brio Live Album

So tomorrow the SF based jazz / soul band, Con Brio, headed by the powerful vocals of Xandra Corpora is releasing their second album at The Independent in San Francisco. The album balks from the the text-book progression for a band and is unconventionally a live album. Let me address the thoughts that probably popped into your head when you read the preceding sentence

That’s ballsy and almost hubris for an emerging band to do a live album.

Yes, yes it is ballsy. But hubris it is not (so quit being such a pretentious asshole). If you’ve ever seen Con Brio live it becomes immediately evident that the stage is where that band is in it’s element. The energy is off the charts, and there’s a lock-step groove that emerges out of their deep arrangements that takes a very saturated genre of music and gives it a spin that is easy to recognize as one word: special.

Yeah, ok, but live recordings usually don’t translate onto record…

Damn, you’re a doubter. It was recorded at the legendary Great American Music Hall in SF with a ton of special guests, and was very carefully engineered, recorded and mixed. You can easily slip away into a song and not even realize that it’s a live album (the band is that dead-on most of the time) but the tracks capture just enough of the energy and crowd that you seriously start to believe you are there.

Alright, fine, so where do I get this album?

Thought you’d come around. Step 1) Go to the Independent tomorrow night (tix are going fast so get yours here). Step 2) Pick up the album at the show. Boom.

Here’s a sample of what you’d see there:

From one of the more underrated indie pop albums of recent memory, this is the New Pornographers lead man’s 2004 solo album, The Slow Wonder, and it sounds very Canadian.

David Choe on the cover of NYTimes

February 3rd, 2012

We don’t like to report on the finances of our friends, so we will let David explain about why he, David Choe, was on the cover of the New York Times today, just below the Egypt soccer riots, and why he and Facebook will continue to be tied together in some sort of way.

Fuck, have you had the dream where you ARE this guy?!? And then some kind of happy accident happens , and as you’re in the middle of this glorious car crash , you stop to realize , that there is actually no such thing as an accident, and no chance encounters, and that everything has a direct purpose ? am I the only one that has this dream ? You never had that dream? It’s actually very very similar to another dream I have where I wake up at noon to my phone ringing, and the ringtone is butterfly wings, I pick it up and it’s Howard stern, the view, Ellen, Charlie rose, telemundo and every news outlet in the world and they are all begging to have morning breath phone sex with me. I rub one out quick to a cacophony of moans and then I get up and see my picture on the cover of the new york times and I find out that I’m the most highest paid decorator alive……..To be continued ☺ LOL”

Thursday Never Knows: “I Want to Tell You”

February 2nd, 2012

One of the most underrated songs in the Beatles catalog (which is a dumb thing to even write) is the George Harrison 1966 gem, “I Want to Tell You.” Revolver is full of special moments, jumping from feeling to feeling, and Harrison seems to more in-tune with Lennon on this album, taking pop to new levels.

A true game-changer and one of the most influential American artists to come from the post-punk movement, Mike Kelley appears to have committed suicide today. He was 57. He did the cover of Sonic Youth album, Dirty, but also a slew of amazing installation pieces that incorporated mass culture with high brow fused together. He will be missed. A nice obit is at the LA Times.
