We don’t get excited for movies coming to the theater that often, especially summer blockbusters, but Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises finale will get us very, very excited. This trailer, and NFL scene, makes us actually get a little tingle. Not that tingle, the other kind.
We had the chance to see, thanks to our friend Jimmy DiMarcellis who art-directed the film, Francis Ford Coppola’s newest horror/B-movie ode/personal heartache/brilliantly experimental film, Twixt, this past weekend in the Napa Valley town of St Helena. It was one of the most imaginative and fun films we have ever seen, and such a thrill to see what an original vision both Jimmy and Coppola were able to get onto the screen. It is a must-see for anyone who appreciates experimental film, and Edgar Allan Poe.
Elmo is a real person. We didn’t know that. Apparently, there is a documentary coming out called “Being Elmo,” that follows the puppeter and his character, Elmo. Enjoy the trailer.
And Miranda July, who is married to Mike Mills, has her own film about to be released. It is called ‘The Future.” Here is this film’s summary: “IN THEATERS JULY 29th! In her follow-up to ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW, internationally-acclaimed artist, author and filmmaker Miranda July returns with this story of a thirty-something couple whose decision to adopt a cat changes their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in themselves and each other.”
Mike Mills, the artist and filmmaker, who once gave us the film “Thumbsucker,” is back with his newest written and directed piece, “Beginners.” The film should be out in theaters soon, if not really soon.
The summary: From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. “Beginners” imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of “Inglourious Basterds”) only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who — following 44 years of marriage — came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.
And we are not being pretentious or jerks at all, but does anyone actually get excited about these movies at this point? Like, do you have friends that say, “Hell yes, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon is coming out in three weeks, I can’t wait!”? Because we really want to know.
We don’t know much about video games, maybe close to nothing, but we have been hearing a bunch about Rockstar’s new game, LA Noire. From the looks of it, you are playing LA Confidential with some of the best face-recognition graphics we have ever seen. The game is set in 1947, and you get to play detective with all the real fillings in there; crime investigations, murders, detective work, interviews, scene of the crime, etc.
