An Infinite Voyage and Everything in Between: A Traveling Art Project from Miami to Los Angeles Part V

After a great experience in Marfa, we drove into the sun towards the final fringes of Texas to El Paso. A city that’s just a short hop to the Mexican border, El Paso sits next to Juarez, Mexico, a town notorious for its high rate of violence, cartels and crime. Someone in the car mentioned how the city of Juarez had three times the amount of crime committed in the most murderous city of the States, and that women disappear constantly, often with no hope of ever being found. On a less somber note, Juarez is the only city outside of the U.S. to have a monument dedicated to Abraham Lincoln.

A quick drive through downtown in the early evening yielded a deserted neighborhood that echoed San Francisco’s Mission District at four in the morning. The last time he came here, Jason stumbled upon a thriving community bustling with an explosion of food trucks and vendors. Instead, we left this sleepy part of town and drove over to Chico’s Tacos, a Mexican fast food restaurant that looked dangerously delicious and heart-clogging at the same time. We gorged on a greasy but delicious meal before leaving for the next state. Passing through a city at night feels like the fleeting memories of a dream I can’t quite remember when I wake up– flashes of landscapes and thoughts come and go but I can’t seem to fully grasp the entirety of the picture.

We continued into the darkness towards New Mexico, finally hitting the border around 10 p.m. The landscape in New Mexico is supposed to be one of the most scenic drives of our trip, but the night only allowed for slivers of a divided road, guided by the headlamps that bore down on it.

The next morning we woke up in Albuquerque, home of my now-favorite food, a stuffed sopaisilla. Stufy’s only exists in Albuquerque, and creates fine inventions such as the Stufy #7, a fluffy fried pastry dough stuffed (hence the name) with carne adovada, home fried potatoes, cheese and lettuce. We then made our way towards Santa Fe via the Torquoise Trail and stumbled upon a self-proclaimed ghost town called Madrid. A tiny strip of a community halfway to our destination, Madrid is a quirky town with bedazzled rural storefronts that looks like a puzzle pieced together with a mishmash of stray leftovers. It was fun strolling through this town and speaking with its eclectic members; one woman was on her way to London for vacation and, upon hearing my accent, asked me to give a few suggestions. I politely pointed out where I was from before scooting out of her thrift store.

Santa Fe felt like a smaller and quieter version of Albuquerque, with similar street names and the same pueblo-influenced architecture that’s native to New Mexico. Being my first time in New Mexico, I was awed and inspired by the intense, picturesque sunsets that saturated the sky with fiery flames of clouds licking the edges of my periphery.

I had an interest in seeing Los Alamos, as I had come across a great photo book on the town by William Eggleston that painted a beautiful impression of everyday vernacular life of the 1960’s and 70’s. So from Santa Fe, we took a detour to Los Alamos, 40 miles northwest of where we were. The drive there was magnificent, with canyons of mesas and plateaus jutting from both sides. When we got there, we realized that most of period architecture and life was gone, impossible to find. We started for Albuquerque and at this point only had one thing in mind: Stufy’s #7, with an extra side of fries.

Josh’s Trip to Miami 1 of 3

November 6th, 2010

Ok so, to my behest, I had to go to Miami; the most humid place in the world, to visit my family. There is really nothing interesting at all that goes on there. Moreover, it is the most boring place I’ve ever been too. So please bare with me as I relay this trip to you in three parts:

451d62a6300x1200.jpg Josh’s Trip to Miami 1 of 3 waitress trip reunion photography florida family battle at 3 am battle at 3 a.m.

The flight to florida was super fast, only four hours and forty five minutes. My mother and I arrived early in the morning to a very humid climate. Both of us were overdressed for the occasion.

Miami is a city of cars; if you don’t have a car you can’t really go anywhere without waiting a long time for a bus or a ride from your homie. Because there are so many cars, and the roads are so big, there are a lot of accidents. We were reminded of this on our way downtown.

2f4d8899360x1200.jpg Josh’s Trip to Miami 1 of 3 waitress trip reunion photography florida family battle at 3 am battle at 3 a.m.

This is one of my uncles! We have a strange relationship. Whenever I see this guy it is really awkward. All he talks about is his luxury jewelry business and money, money, and money.  I couldn’t wait for my reunion with him to end.

After that we met with my aunt to go thrifting and to eat cuban food. We drove through the ghetto to go to some ghetto thrift shops, which turned out to be very over priced and have lots of over sized clothes. There are lots of fat people in Florida.

This rare sight used to make florida worth visiting

This is another reason to go to Florida: the Cuban food is cheap and off the wall like Michael Jackson. This was our waitress. She kind of brought us more food then we ordered and charged us for it. She also acted impressed when we spoke to her in spanish. She was just playing us!!

Vacated properties are becoming more and more common around South Florida. Not only is this car seemingly abandoned but that huge building behind it is as well.

Maria brought PEZ and I to a hidden fortress on top of a mountain. It was probably the best part of the trip.  We walked for like an hour in each direction in total darkness, through the woods the get to a stone house where we chilled and listened to sick Dub music and smoked cigarettes. I actually got like 20 minutes of sleep there, as well. Honestly, to go there at night like that was something out of a dream.

Last night, on a platform in Emeryville, California, Upper Playground and The Citrus Report said goodbye to PEZ and Joshua Blank as they embarked on a train and bicycle trip to Portland, Oregon, ending in a new “You Can’t Win” show at FIFTY24PDX Gallery opening September 2nd. So the show is going on a tour, with the FIFTY24SF Gallery in SF show coming down tomorrow.

PEZ and Josh are on the train now headed to the south or Oregon, and then on their bikes for the rest of the excursion. If you live in Oregon and want to say hi, get on the side of the road and wave as they bike by… don’t scare them, they are on a mission. Or maybe just said a hello via Facebook?

SKETCH 4 SKETCH UPDATED & LOCKED!

April 28th, 2010

9854918027etch10.jpg SKETCH 4 SKETCH UPDATED & LOCKED! zerofriends Yone words trip tour Texas robot red pink machinist Jeremy Fish fish eyes suck ink california Alex Pardee

“Hey, Alex, a couple of the good folk who came by the Atlanta Sketch4Sketch stop said you were starting to resemble Tom Hanks in Philadelphia and almost passed out in your own filmy drool while drawing them a picture of a bulldog with elephantiasis. What the fuck man, I thought you were kinda professional!??”

Well, mysterious quotable person, I will answer your questions with sentences that have question marks at the ends but aren’t really questions:
1. We have so far travelled over 5000 miles by car in less than 2 weeks, slept less than The Machinist, stopped in 8 different cities and drawn close to a thousand drawings for artists of all ages who have been kind enough to grant us with some of THEIR art. Regardless of our near-perfect physiques, rigorous daily exercise routines, and military background, we recently hit a physical, mental & financial breaking point and had to figure out how to rearrange things in order to make it home alive. As now….it is survival?
2. What gave you the impression that we were professional? Was it my pink cosmetic bag? Or perhaps my proper use of the words “Dude” and “dick”?

So, with that lengthy desperate diatribe being typed, and though please understand that we have tried our hardest to accommodate the ridiculous overambitious schedule that I originally planned, we have officially made the rest of the SKETCH 4 SKETCH tour a little more spread out, a little smaller, but A LOT MORE FOCUSED. Yes, I know a lot of the places & cities that we promised we would be are not on this list, but let’s make this tour finish strong so that NEXT time, we CAN spend a little time planning it out and get to stop in more cities, spend more time with you, and continue to soak up that inspiration that we are DEFINITELY receiving on this tour. I can describe everyone we have met (except for these dudes at a Taco Time in Omaha) as something that rhymes with “zamazing” and “rinspiring”.

So, check out these dates, and click on the ones with links for a little more specific info about that venue. And, as usual, follow us on Twitter for any spontaneous secret stuff along the way:) Hint: what do Mickey Avalon, Jeremy Fish, Secret Treasures, Texas Chainsaws, Kevin Hayes, and N8 Van Dyke have in common?
