Artist Cai Guoqiang who is well known for his spectacular gunpowder artworks including his artistic direction in the Beijing Olympics, continues to experiment with innovative ways to use fireworks to paint the sky. One of his latest projects took place in mid June of this year and was titled ‘ Sky Ladder’.  True to its name, the project was about animating the sky with fireworks shaped like a ladder that began as a dream the artist had over 21 years ago.  The magical ladder which spans 1650ft high and 18ft wide was cast with a large balloon to hold up its structure.  And just before sunrise the fireworks began, and the ladder began to take shape one step at a time towards the sky:

Sky Ladder, realized at Huiyu Island Harbour, Quanzhou, Fujian, June15, 2015 at 4:49 am, approximately 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
